Unreliable eyewitnesses involved in almost 100 convictions every year, report claims
The Justice Gap have reported on a new study that suggests unreliable eyewitness testimony may be responsible for close to 100 convictions every year in the UK.
The study, carried out by Dara Mojtahedi, an investigative psychologist at the University of Huddersfield, suggests that in 48% of the cases where the wrong person is convicted as a result of unreliable eyewitness testimony, the actual offender will continue committing crimes.
You can find more information in these two stories:
- Almost 100 people a year convicted as a result of unreliable eyewitness evidence, new study claims
- The misinformation effect: how multiple eye witnesses can make the same mistake
How long will it be until all eye witnesses have thier initial comments digitally recorded ?
Would this not eradicate most of the problem any change in thier account could then be questioned also the exact response to officers could not be mistaken or misinterpreted.
I mean how many times latter on in an investigation is a witness told what they had said rather than actually remembering the “facts”.
