Dave Wood

1997

Dave Wood was arrested for an armed robbery of a Nationwide Building Society branch by police who thought he looked like the robber appearing on the building society’s video which recorded the robbery.

He was convicted on the evidence of staff who picked him out seven months later at an identity parade.

He spent 13 months in jail

His appeal was successful because of the evidence of barber Alan Garlick who testified that Dave could never have worn the sideburns that the robber clearly displayed in the Nationwide video. The barber was found by Janice Davies, then Chair of INNOCENT and sister of wrongly convicted Kevin Callan.

INNOCENT hired a bus to take his family and other supporters to London for the appeal.
