Valentine Cooke's conviction was quashed in January 1992. The other convictions were quashed in 1991. All were based on the evidence of supergrass Paul Jarvis. He asked for 1510 crimes in which he claimed to have been involved to be taken into consideration (tic). However more than half these crimes had taken place when Jarvis was in prison for other offences. Exposure of Jarvis's lies in court did not prevent the West Midlands Serious Crimes Squad from claiming that they had solved them.
